Situated in the heart of New York City, our Department is the largest in Weill Cornell Medicine. Composed of 16 divisions and nearly 2,250 physicians and scientists, our Department’s outstanding faculty offer the highest levels of expertise across internal medicine and its subspecialties.

Our faculty and trainees deliver expert clinical care to a diverse population of patients from New York City, the tri-state area and the world at NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital, NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, and NewYork-Presbyterian Queens Hospital.
Over the past decade, the Department has experienced explosive growth in its scientific mission and productivity. In addition to our large and growing portfolio of National Institutes of Health (NIH) R and K grants, our investigators collaborate on projects with colleagues at Weill Cornell Medicine’s Clinical and Translational Science Center (CTSC), our neighboring world-class institutions, Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Rockefeller University, and Hospital for Special Surgery, and institutions across the world.
Home to one of the country's top-tier residency training programs, we are known for our innovative approach to education. Residents-in-training, fellows, and Weill Cornell medical students enjoy first-rate training, an environment of camaraderie, and a wide array of clinical and research opportunities. Our dedicated faculty engage in a proactive style of mentoring geared toward building a young physician's career path, whether it be as a physician-scientist, clinician, educator, or academic leader.
At a pivotal time when academic medicine is making great clinical and scientific advances, we also face headwinds. Ever increasing clinical complexity, health inequity, post-COVID19 dislocation, physician and staff burnout, and increasing competition for federal research support are just some of the challenges.
