Annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QIPS) Poster Symposium Celebrates Patient Safety Initiatives and Innovations

The Annual Quality Improvement and Patient Safety (QIPS) Poster Symposium was held at Griffis Faculty Club last month, on May 22, 2024. For more than a decade, this event has been an interdepartmental and interdisciplinary celebration of grassroots quality and patient safety initiatives and innovations.

Co-sponsored through the Quality Improvement Academy-Weill Cornell Medicine (QIA), the NewYork-Presbyterian (NYP) Department of Nursing, and the Physician Organization’s Division of Quality and Patient Safety, the evening program included 42 projects from 15 departments across Weill Cornell Medicine, NewYork-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan and NewYork-Presbyterian Queens. Projects were selected through a peer-review process by QIA alumni, our department’s Quality Improvement Patient Safety Committee, NYP Nursing, and the Weill Cornell Medicine Housestaff Quality Council. Three were recognized from the departments of Pediatrics, Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Nursing with distinction for their excellent incorporation of QI and safety methodology, innovation, and impact on patient care.

The event also celebrated QIA's eighth graduating class of 17 faculty from seven clinical departments. The Class of 2024 graduates from the Weill Department of Medicine presented their projects earlier in the day at Grand Rounds. Congratulations to Dr. Emily Finkelstein (Division of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine), Dr. Paul Martin (Division of General Internal Medicine/Section of Hospital Medicine), and Rachel Stahl Salzman, MS, RD, CDN, CDCES,  (Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes & Metabolism).

Dr. Jennifer I. Lee, Director of QIA and Vice Chair for Quality and Safety, expressed thanks to the Weill Cornell Medicine Department chairs for supporting their faculty in this year's QIA class: Dr. John P. Leonard (Weil Department of Medicine), Dr. Sallie Permar (Department of Pediatrics), Dr. Rahul Sharma (Department of Emergency Medicine), Dr. Hugh Hemmings (Department of Anesthesiology, Dr. Laura Riley (Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology), Dr. Stephen J.
